Khun Mae Kum Mee Forest Park

Rong Kwang, Phrae

Projects Details

Khun Mae Kum Mee Forest Park has a total area of 19,153.72 rai. This forest park is a Category 1 project, planted according to the National Economic and Social Development Plan. It is located in the southern part of Phrae Province. This T-VER-METH-FOR-03 project was initiated to establish teak plantations starting in 1968. The overall terrain of the forest park is characterized by alternating hills and deep ravines. The original forest was a mixed deciduous forest with teak trees mixed with Dipterocarpus alatus, receiving ample rainfall throughout the year. Numerous small streams are scattered throughout Khun Mae Kum Mee Forest Park, most of which only carry water during the rainy season. These streams contribute to the Yom River basin. Moreover, Khun Mae Kum Mee Forest Park comprises four types of natural forests which are dry dipterocarp forest, mixed deciduous forest with pine, mixed deciduous forest, and dry evergreen forest.

Sustainable Management at Mae Kum Mee Forest Park was established on August 1 in 2015, with the objective to commit a sustainable forest management aligned with the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) standards. This involves a balance  approach to environmental, social, and economic in every aspects.

PROJECT IMPACT AND BENEFITS:

Watersheds protected                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             We have avoided any harmful activities in our project area and constructed check dams to enhance soil fertility since river basin and creeks are very important for biodiversity conservation and natural development

Biodiversity Protection                                                                                                                                                                                                                              Our project prohibit any hunting or activities that can cause negative effect to wildlife and collecting endangered plant species to preserve the natural ecosystem by our patrolling team guarding the area

Social Aspects
We have developed an educational programs to foster a sense of environmental stewardship among people and their local youth through sustainability based particularly regarding forest conservation. Furthermore, community support are also our first priority to provide an essential infrastructure such as road repairs and water pumps for the purpose of improving the quality of life for nearby communities.

Economic Aspects
The project has provided jobs during the planting period and also permanent jobs to maintain the forest at its highest standard which we have prioritized the employment of local residents in the community to alleviate and improve their livelihood.

Risk Mitigation

By Implementing the below strategies in our project area to address any potential threats such as:                                              1. Wildfires Risk    : we have established firebreaks to prevent and detect wildfires
